Reverse Chronological Biography of John Jay Daly
Professional Speaker - Speech Coach Prolific Author
1976 to Present: President of Daly Communications, originally headquartered in Washington, DC and since 2005 located in The Parc Somerset complex at 5630 Wisconsin Avenue, Chevy Chase, MD 20815. He also provides
executives with personal, private coaching to improve quality of their presentations, acting, where necessary as a Speech Doctor to polish their remarks.
John also offers meeting planners half a dozen platform-tested topics that can be delivered as keynotes or seminars for all types of events across the country. He has spoken in 45 states and several countries.
In addition, he coaches executives about proven, practical ways to improve their presentation skills. His basic thesis: most business speeches are too long and too dull.
He’s the author of Mastering Meetings and A Communicator’s Chapbook
each of which contains many of his 100+ tactical tipsheets covering six subject areas plus a variety of material useful when communicating orally and/or in writing. John has also has contributed to several other chapters in various books about government relations, especially postal affairs.
1963-1976:
First Washington Representative of the Direct Mail Advertising Association (part-time for first 3 years while serving on staff of PIA; see below).in 1964 which has since become DMA's Government Affairs Conference. The Post Office Department liked idea so much it established the National Postal Forum using the parley as a model. And the USPS developed it into a major activity conducted several times a year around the U.S.
In 1966 was named first VP for DMA and set up its first DC office in the National Press Bldg so as to maintain better press relations in additional to contacts with the nearby Post Office Dep't. Was totally involved
in the massive legislative effort to change the POD into the USPS in the late 60s and early 70s. Several of my beneficial ideas are embedded into the law.
Testified often before both the House and Senate postal committees and occasionally to the Federal Trade Commission. Each year for a dozen years wrote 25 Washington Newsletters s to keep 3000 members apprised of
important developments; also taped up to 23 individual audio news cassettes to be played each month at DM club meetings. For more than a decade I also gave talks to various
In the Spring of 1970, successfully proposed to the DMA Board the concept that quickly became The Mail Preference Service a controversial but award-winning program that saved the DM industry from punitive
legislation. It still helps and has been expanded to cover telephone calls and E-mails. At first it was voluntary but now the MPS program is required to be adhered to by every DMA member. In late 60s set up the Mail
Order Action Line to allow consumers to enlist the services of ass n in trying to resolve conflicts with firms regardless of their affiliation with the association.
1961-1966:
Public Relations Director, Printing Industries of America, a national trade association with 10,000 members who are commercial printers. Wrote monthly column for magazine which I edited, prepared testimonies to Congress, counseled members about PR techniques. Helped program and stage conferences and various meetings. Authored DM promotions for events. Supervised judging procedures for two PIA-sponsored contests and answered media queries.
1960-1961:
PR Account Executive in Washington, DC Office of Ketchum, MacLeod & Grove, a national agency based in Pittsburgh, PA.. Worked for several accounts (Better Highway Information Foundation, the Apple Institute and, for the West Virginia Coal Ass n. This involved flying to state on Monday and returning on Friday for six months. Traveled to 44 of WV s 55 counties to meet personally with editors to present WVCA s story. Result: many favorable editorials so when legislature met, and a proposed tax on coal was soundly defeated.
1955-1960:
Publicity Director, National Institute of Drycleaning, a trade association with 9000.members. Established and totally produced bi-monthly employee publication. Wrote column for NID s magazine, edited clip sheet mailed to hundred of media outlets, counseled members about good PR practices, including presenting 5 hours of PR tips at Weekend Workshops in various US cities half a dozen times a year.
Major accomplishment: introduced drycleaning into Russia in late 59 after conceiving plan to invite Nikita Khruschev s wife to tour our model drycleaning plant while her husband was sequestered while conferring with
President Eisenhower at Camp David. Since drycleaning is such a mundane topic it takes considerable creativity to warrant major coverage. Also regularly used surveys to generate media coverage about industry.

1950-1955: After college graduation took 3 month European Tour then began career as Copy Aide before being promoted to news photographer on editorial staff of The Washington Post where several pictures ran on
page one albeit most displayed in Metro Section. During this period, I served during Korean War as a Navy Photo Officer and later as Public Info Officer.
Served on carrier USS Princeton off the coast of Korea supervising team of 21 photomates processing still and motion pictures for intelligence and PI purposes. We even produced a yearbook of the cruise with many
dramatic pix for the 7000 men aboard, including jet squadrons. Afterward did Pub Info work with a jet photo squadron based near San Diego, Calif. During 3 year Navy career my wife and I moved eleven times. Remained
in US Naval Reserve for next 17 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. Completed several two-week tours in Pentagon and at naval stations in the US and twice at USN bases in Rota, Spain. Learned how to deal
effectively within a giant highly structured organization.
1957-60: Completed graduate studies in Mass Communications at American University in DC but travel demands and business pressures precluded obtaining desired M.A. degree.
1946-1950:
Undergraduate in College of Arts & Sciences at Georgetown University in DC, majoring in English. Served for four years on college weekly ( The Hoya ) Worked way thru college by selling subs to Time and Life magazines; for 3 of those years, sold more subs per capita than any other student in Time Inc s nation-wide College Bureau For previous decade sold mag subs door to door in DC neighborhood.
1942-1946:
One of dozen students in charter class of Priory School (now Abbey School) a rigorous curriculum conducted by Benedictine monks of St Anselm s where 100% of graduates attend college. Only five of original enrollment of 18 made it through the entire four years.
Held various summer jobs, including messenger with Canadian Purchasing Mission (where The Madison Hotel now is) and one summer of 45 with US Forest Service in northern Idaho fighting forest fires; when there were no
fires was assigned to the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine of the U S Dep t of Agriculture to eliminate harmful rabies plants.
1934-1942: Attended K through 8 at the grade school operated by Blessed Sacrament Parish in Chevy Chase, DC (Remain active in this Catholic parish.)
Honors And Awards
PR Hall of Fame (elected in 1998) by the National Capital Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Member since 1958, Chapter President in 1973. This is largest of PRSA s 30+ chapters. Have spoken several
times to chapter; General chair of the 1975 national PRSA conference in Miami. Accredited in PR in 1974. enrolled as PRSA College of Fellows in the mid 80s.
Honorary Life Member - Direct Marketing Ass’n of Washington
(1500 members) Active since 1961. Marketing Advents increasing its size from 4-pages to 24-pages. Emceed its annual luncheon for dozen years; talked at conferences. Active in its
Silver Apple Award - Given in 1994 by Direct Marketing Club of New York for long continuous service to club and to industry. JJD was first non-New Yorker to merit this.
Old Timers Award
presented in 1990 by the publication Board Room Reports for continued service to DM, especially in communicating news and insights to direct marketers about changes in postal affairs In addition to a handsome engraved glass plaque a sizable honorarium was included in the impressive ceremonies at McGraw-Hill s auditorium.
Alumnus of Year
First recipient of this award (a handsome chair) presented in 1995 by St. Anselm s Abbey School for continuous support of this educationally demanding school. All 4 of his sons are graduates and he was a member of its charter class. . While replacements were added during the 4 years,. only 5 of the 18 students who began as freshmen completed its rigorous four years.
Founder, in 1980, of National Capital Chapter of National Speakers Association, now known as NSA/DC.
In early 90s served two consecutive years as co-president of this group and of course served on its Board of Directors. Currently; there are nearly 200 members who meet on 2nd Saturday morning of each month. . .One member each year receives The Daly Award at year-end ceremony. Have addressed various educational workshops conducted by Chapter and for past several years has served as Special Advisor to the Chapter President.
Member, Board of Directors, National Speakers Association. In 1980s elected three times to 3-year terms. Several marketing ideas were adopted and are still help NSA function more effectively.
These include renaming its Cassette of Month program to The Voices of Experience, embedding a graduated registration fee to encourage early conference sign ups. In addition to encourage continuous membership in NSA,
suggested by-laws change so that the person’s membership year cited in directory means continuous and unbroken. Have presented programs to several NSA chapters as well as before two national conferences &
workshops.
Program Coordinator Veteran Speakers Retreat Since 1998 have served on committee to plan program for this annual weekend event begun in 1988. In 2000 became coordinator to chair Program Planning Committee

Volunteer Family of Year honored in 1999 by the National Family Caregivers Ass'n for exemplary work providing care for wife who has had Alzheimer s since 1992.

Active with various projects, particularly coordinating since 1999 the complex logistics for the annual Tour d Canal the longest off-road bicycle charity ride in the US. It lasts two days in early September and now
attracts some 100 riders who pedal the 184 miles from Cumberland, Md to downtown DC.
Personal:
The morning after completing Officer Candidate School in Newport RI, and being commissioned as an Ensign in the U S Navy, was married on 7 June 52 to former Lucille Corbett of Scranton, PA. Moved 11 times during the
next 3 years living in two posts in Florida and 3 in California. After Korean War ended, returned to The Washington Post as photographer, then began PR career with the National Institute of Drycleaning (see above).
He and his wife have raised eight children ( all girls except for the four boys ) each of whom has graduated from different colleges and are now pursuing careers. Four live in the DC area with two in Colorado. one in
Calif. and one in RI. The Dalys have 10 grandchildren. Early each year they publish The Daly Greeting dubbed The only Daly paper published annually.
It was begun by his father in 1916 and has been continued by John since 1976. Stories are a lighthearted look at what happened with their family with emphasis on what s the major news is likely to be early in each
year. He s certain many of his children will continue the legacy.
Since 1985 John has served on Advisory Board of The Salvation Army for the National Capital Area which meets monthly and guides this group so it effectively renders varied needed services. Have long served as advisor
to the Susan B. Anthony List based in Alexandria, VA.
Have been BOD member of the area Alzheimer s Ass’n since 02 and is a member of half a dozen varied groups in DC area. Extremely active in this parish of my boyhood, as lector since 1965, usher, a Eucharistic
Minister, an Arimathean and part-time receptionist at rectory.
